The Grade 5 curriculum gives students more tools to creatively express themselves and more accountability for their learning. The weekly 1.5-hour class is focused on elevating students' sense of expression, developing the literacy and speaking skills necessary for excellence in communication. In this grade, the curriculum is no longer spiral, rather developmental with one topic explored and consolidated before moving onto the next. The topics include relative clauses, impromptu speeches, Shakespeare, and article-based discussions. With a focus on understanding the nuances of grammar and different writing styles, our grade 5 students gain the ability to craft pieces of writing and presentations for a multitude of contexts. In addition, a novel study, cursive writing, and drills continue to be key components. Students will engage with independent research-focused booklets to further develop their critical reasoning and discussion skills. Unlike previous grades, grade 5 students are expected to write their own class notes and are more accountable for their independent learning. All grade 5 students have tests and write final examinations.
